Holly Primary School is located in Forest Town and is approximately 3 miles to the west of Mansfield town centre.
Holly Primary School opened in 1985 and due to increasing housing developments; we have been extended a number of times to provide extra accommodation.
Our building is primarily open-plan designed around a central courtyard which is currently used as an outside learning space for our Foundation Stage children. The school has a hall, administration offices, and 10 class teaching areas including a Foundation Unit. It has a kitchen providing hot meals daily which has helped us attain Healthy Schools status. The external areas are beautifully landscaped and include hard play areas, a school field, and various fitness, environmental and outdoor learning areas.
Our leadership team strategically review the organisation of the school each year to utilise staffing and provide the most appropriate social dynamics and educational potential for our children. All class groups are of mixed ability and are transitionally grouped.
The school is committed to developing outstanding primary practice and has a reputation for excellence in its curriculum achievements. The school is well placed to deliver the 21st century curriculum with an integrated approach to learning, delivered through exciting and inovative whole school policies and programmes.
A phoneme is a speech sound.
In speech as in writing we express ourselves using words. In writing each word is made up of letters, and in speech a word is made up of a series of phonemes. The phonemes in a word do not always correspond to the letters with which we write it.
For example, the word catch contains five letters: c – a – t – c – h, but only three sounds: c – a – tch.
Children who can hear and sound out phonemes accurately make a good start in reading and writing. Here is a short video demonstrating how to make the different sounds correctly.
