KS2 – Year Five & Six
A broad and balanced curriculum provides children with the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to develop into well-rounded, informed individuals.
Welcome to Y5/6
Children have now entered their final two years at Holly Primary School and we aim to ensure there is a balance between a stimulating and exciting curriculum and preparation for their end-of-year assessments. We place a greater emphasis on further developing independence and responsibility for their own learning. We aim to encourage a more mature attitude through participation in initiatives such as DARE, British Values and PSHE.
In addition to all of the hard work, the children can look forward to our longer residential experiences in Walesby and Edale alongside other exciting trips. We have three classes in upper Key Stage Two and we operate an open-door policy where parents are always welcome. Our Yammer feed below will give you regular updates about life in Years 5 and 6.

Autumn One – Overview
Welcome back to a new year in Years 5 and 6.
Our main topic for this half term is World War Two. As part of this work, the children will learn about the causes of the war, the role of Adolf Hitler and how people’s lives were affected. Our visit to the Holocaust Centre on Thursday 19th September will focus more closely on the lives of Jewish people and how they were affected by the war. The day will allow the children to follow the ‘journey’ of a Jewish child named Leo.
All our English lessons will also be linked to World War Two. We will begin by focussing on the short animated film ‘The Piano’ in which the children will take on the role of a soldier and think about his memories. We will then move onto studying the book ‘Letters from the Lighthouse in which the children will learn about the life of evacuee children who moved to the countryside. Finally, we will study The Diary of Anne Frank’, looking at extracts from her diary and again focussing on the lives of Jewish people.
Our maths lessons this half term will all be focussing on ‘number’ and understanding place value. Children will extend their prior knowledge of rounding, comparing and ordering numbers, moving onto working with numbers into millions. We also plan to give the children opportunities for problem solving and working as groups to practise reasoning.
PE kits need to be in school every day in case of changes to timetables. This kit should consist of a t-shirt, trousers or shorts and a jumper/hoodie in the PE colours (white, grey, blue or black). Football shirts and brightly coloured hoodies are not acceptable PE wear.
As the Year 6 children near the end of their time at Holly, they will be putting together a leavers’ service for the last day of term. Make sure you have the tissues at the ready!
Extra Information & Site Links
English Journals will be given out to the children. They will be set a weekly task to complete and hand in for the following Monday. We ask you to sign these pages to ensure the children have completed the activity and filled in their reading section for reading at home. Please encourage your children to note how many pages/chapters they have read when adding up their 100 reads. Children will also be set English or Maths homework to be completed by the set date given in their homework diary.
Our doors are always open if you need to speak to us and we thank you for your continuing support. We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead!
Thank you for your continued help and support.
