KS2 – Year Five & Six
A broad and balanced curriculum provides children with the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to develop into well-rounded, informed individuals.
Welcome to Y5/6
Children have now entered their final two years at Holly Primary School and we aim to ensure there is a balance between a stimulating and exciting curriculum and preparation for their end-of-year assessments. We place a greater emphasis on further developing independence and responsibility for their own learning. We aim to encourage a more mature attitude through participation in initiatives such as DARE, British Values and PSHE.
In addition to all of the hard work, the children can look forward to our longer residential experiences in Walesby and Edale alongside other exciting trips. We have three classes in upper Key Stage Two and we operate an open-door policy where parents are always welcome. Our Yammer feed below will give you regular updates about life in Years 5 and 6.
Autumn One – Overview
Welcome back to the start of a new and exciting year in Years 5 and 6!
Our main topic this half term is ‘World War One’. In this topic we will be learning about the events that triggered the start of the war, the countries that were involved and the alliances that were formed, the conditions and experiences of soldiers on the front line and the role of women and children during the war. Our English work will also link to our topic and extend our understanding of World War One. We are currently studying ‘War Game’ by Michael Foreman and will be studying ‘War Horse’ by Michael Morpurgo as well as examining a range of wartime poetry before writing our own poem.
Maths will follow the National Curriculum and all classes will start securing and developing their understanding of number and place value this term. There will also be a big focus on catch up tasks to make up for lost learning during recent months. We also have a strong emphasis on fluency, problem solving and reasoning. We are continuing Times Tables Rockstars this year and we are excited to find out who the first Rockstars will be! Please keep encouraging your children to log on at home as regularly as possible.
Every class is also partcipating in a 10-week DARE programme. Each week children will learn about a different aspect of DARE (including drugs, alcohol, peer pressure and cyber-bullying) and will be expected to complete a short piece of homework. DARE sessions will take place every Friday and children will need to ensure their DARE book is in school for each session.
Thank you for your continued support and our doors are always open if you want to ask us anything.

English Journals will be given out to the children. They will be set a weekly task to complete and hand in for the following Monday. We ask you to sign these pages to ensure the children have completed the activity and filled in their reading section for reading at home. Please encourage your children to note how many pages/chapters they have read when adding up their 100 reads. Children will also be set English or Maths homework to be completed by the set date given in their homework diary.
Our doors are always open if you need to speak to us and we thank you for your continuing support. We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead!
Thank you for your continued help and support.
