KS2 – Year Five & Six
A broad and balanced curriculum provides children with the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to develop into well-rounded, informed individuals.
Welcome to Y5/6
Children have now entered their final two years at Holly Primary School and we aim to ensure there is a balance between a stimulating and exciting curriculum and preparation for their end-of-year assessments. We place a greater emphasis on further developing independence and responsibility for their own learning. We aim to encourage a more mature attitude through participation in initiatives such as DARE, British Values and PSHE.
In addition to all of the hard work, the children can look forward to our longer residential experiences in Walesby and Edale alongside other exciting trips. We have three classes in upper Key Stage Two and we operate an open-door policy where parents are always welcome. Our Yammer feed below will give you regular updates about life in Years 5 and 6.
Spring Two – Overview
This half-term our main topic is The Anglo-Saxons. We will be learning about the history of this group of invaders and the reasons why they chose to settle in Britain. We will also look into how they brought law and order into Britain, what evidence we have today that showed that they were here and famous Anglo-Saxons including Alfred the Great.
Our English work will focus on the well-known Anglo-Saxon legend of Beowulf where we will be studying the language of legends, making predictions about the story and focusing on writing and punctuating dialogue accurately. This unit will end with the children planning and writing their very own Anglo-Saxon legend.
Our maths work will continue to follow the National Curriculum for years 5 and 6 and each class will be focussing on a different area including fractions, decimals, measure and geometry.
This half-term is a crucial time for the Year 6 children as the SATs tests are rapidly approaching. It is important that your child is in school to prevent missing vital lessons and that they come ready to learn and with a positive attitude. Mock SATs week will commence on Monday 23rd March, with all Year 6 children carrying out the tests as they will do in actual SATs week.
Thank you for your continued support and our doors are always open if you want to ask us anything.

English Journals will be given out to the children. They will be set a weekly task to complete and hand in for the following Monday. We ask you to sign these pages to ensure the children have completed the activity and filled in their reading section for reading at home. Please encourage your children to note how many pages/chapters they have read when adding up their 100 reads. Children will also be set English or Maths homework to be completed by the set date given in their homework diary.
Our doors are always open if you need to speak to us and we thank you for your continuing support. We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead!
Thank you for your continued help and support.
