Year Five & Six

Welcome to Upper Key Stage Two (Y5 & Y6)

Children have now entered their final two years at Holly Primary School and we aim to ensure there is a balance between a stimulating and exciting curriculum and preparation for their end-of-year assessments. We place a greater emphasis on further developing independence and responsibility for their own learning. We aim to encourage a more mature attitude through participation in initiatives such as DARE, British Values and PSHE.

In addition to all of the hard work, the children can look forward to our longer residential experiences in Walesby and Edale alongside other exciting trips. We have three classes in upper Key Stage Two and we operate an open-door policy where parents are always welcome. Our Yammer feed below will give you regular updates about life in Years 5 and 6.

Mr. Ashley McIlwaine - KS2 Teacher, SENDco, History
Mrs Amy Middleton - Deputy Headteacher, KS2 Teacher, Mathematics, Appraisal & Quality First Teaching, WSCP
Miss Sophie McGuiness - Head of School, Child Protection, Assessment, Closing the Gap, Appraisal, Quality First Teaching, SLE, SIP lead, WSCP, Student placements, Attendance

Learning Overview – Autumn Two – 2021

Welcome back to another busy half term in Year 5 and 6.

Our theme for this half term is The Titanic. Thank you for all the hard work that has been put into their projects over half term, we have been blown away with how good they are. Our English work will all link to this main topic with us beginning by studying different sentence structures, moving on to writing letters of application for a job onboard the Titanic and finishing with a discussion about who was to blame for the sinking.

In geography, our focus will be on rivers. Within this unit, the children will understand the water cycle, the key features of a river and its uses. We are also planning to take the children down to the River Maun to carry out some fieldwork looking at the width, depth and flow of our local river.

Maths will continue to follow the National Curriculum, consolidating written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Children will also understand factors, multiples, prime and square numbers.

PE will continue on a Friday with Mr Lacey. Please ensure your children are dressed appropriately for the colder weather as these lessons will take place outside weather permitting.

We look forward to seeing you at Learning Review. If you would like to make an appointment, please send your child’s class teacher a message on yammer.

Thanks for your continued support,

Extra Information & Site Links

English Journals will be given out to the children. They will be set a weekly task to complete and hand in for the following Monday. We ask you to sign these pages to ensure the children have completed the activity and filled in their reading section for reading at home. Please encourage your children to note how many pages/chapters they have read when adding up their 100 reads. Children will also be set English or Maths homework to be completed by the set date given in their homework diary.

Our doors are always open if you need to speak to us and we thank you for your continuing support. We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead!

Thank you for your continued help and support.
