KS2 – Year Five & Six
A broad and balanced curriculum provides children with the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to develop into well-rounded, informed individuals.
Welcome to Y5/6
Children have now entered their final two years at Holly Primary School and we aim to ensure there is a balance between a stimulating and exciting curriculum and preparation for their end-of-year assessments. We place a greater emphasis on further developing independence and responsibility for their own learning. We aim to encourage a more mature attitude through participation in initiatives such as DARE, British Values and PSHE.
In addition to all of the hard work, the children can look forward to our longer residential experiences in Walesby and Edale alongside other exciting trips. We have three classes in upper Key Stage Two and we operate an open-door policy where parents are always welcome. Our Yammer feed below will give you regular updates about life in Years 5 and 6.

Autumn Two – Overview
Welcome back to an exciting and busy half term on the lead up to Christmas! Our topic this half term is ‘Water’ with our learning question being ‘Will you ever see the water you drink again?’ As part of this topic we will be learning about the water cycle and the conservation of water. We will also be learning about the history of the Titanic and its maiden voyage. All English work will link to our main topic and we will be writing a persuasive text, a letter and a discursive text. In maths we will continue to follow the National Curriculum which will be carrying on with number and calculation and moving on to fractions, decimals and percentages. Please ensure your child is completing their homework and bringing it in on time and check their reads in their English Journal are signed and up to date.
Play rehearsals for our Christmas Panto ‘Aladdin Trouble’ have begun this week. We are excited to get stuck into our performance and the children are well underway with learning their lines. A letter about costumes will be sent out in the next couple of weeks.
Thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions, please feel free to come in and speak to one of us.

English Journals will be given out to the children. They will be set a weekly task to complete and hand in for the following Monday. We ask you to sign these pages to ensure the children have completed the activity and filled in their reading section for reading at home. Please encourage your children to note how many pages/chapters they have read when adding up their 100 reads. Children will also be set English or Maths homework to be completed by the set date given in their homework diary.
Our doors are always open if you need to speak to us and we thank you for your continuing support. We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead!
Thank you for your continued help and support.
