KS2 – Year Five & Six
A broad and balanced curriculum provides children with the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to develop into well-rounded, informed individuals.
Welcome to Y5/6
Children have now entered their final two years at Holly Primary School and we aim to ensure there is a balance between a stimulating and exciting curriculum and preparation for their end-of-year assessments. We place a greater emphasis on further developing independence and responsibility for their own learning. We aim to encourage a more mature attitude through participation in initiatives such as DARE, British Values and PSHE.
In addition to all of the hard work, the children can look forward to our longer residential experiences in Walesby and Edale alongside other exciting trips. We have three classes in upper Key Stage Two and we operate an open-door policy where parents are always welcome. Our Yammer feed below will give you regular updates about life in Years 5 and 6.

Spring One – Overview
Happy New Year and welcome back to a magical half term in Year 5 and 6.
Our topic this half term is Harry Potter and all the children received their acceptance letters to Hogwarts on Tuesday ready to start off the topic. We are all excited about the visits to Warner Bros. Studios on Tuesday 21st and Thursday 23rd January in which the children will get to explore some of the sets from the Harry Potter films and will take part in a film-based workshop.
All of our English work will link to our Harry Potter theme, beginning with a book study about The Philosopher’s Stone in which we will focus on character and setting descriptions. We will then focus on the genre of newspapers, looking in more detail about the structure and how to use quotes in a report. The children will work towards writing a full newspaper report about an event from the story. We will then finish with a story writing unit, in which the children will plan and write their own Harry Potter mini adventure.
All maths work will continue to follow the National Curriculum, with us moving onto looking at fractions, decimal and percentages. As part of this all children will understand how to covert between improper fractions and mixed numbers, understand the methods for adding and subtracting fractions and begin to multiply mixed numbers by whole numbers. Year 6 children will also move onto dividing fractions by whole numbers.
Our science topic this half term will focus on classifying materials according to their properties. Within this study, the children will investigate dissolving, separating mixtures and reversible and irreversible changes.
All children need to have an appropriate PE kit in school each day in case of timetable changes due to weather. This kit must consist of long trousers, a change of t-shirt and a hoody or warm jumper in the Holly school colours (blue, black, white or grey). They may also wear gloves and a hat for outdoor PE sessions when it is very cold.
Extra Information & Site Links
English Journals will be given out to the children. They will be set a weekly task to complete and hand in for the following Monday. We ask you to sign these pages to ensure the children have completed the activity and filled in their reading section for reading at home. Please encourage your children to note how many pages/chapters they have read when adding up their 100 reads. Children will also be set English or Maths homework to be completed by the set date given in their homework diary.
Our doors are always open if you need to speak to us and we thank you for your continuing support. We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead!
Thank you for your continued help and support.
